Cumberland Island Service Weekend
Cumberland Island National Seashore

*Our Cumberland Island Service Weekend is at a smaller capacity than in years past, and registration will fill up extremely fast.

Join the Georgia Conservancy for a fun-filled weekend of conservation, service work and learning with the National Park Service on Cumberland Island.

Cumberland Island is one of Georgia’s greatest natural treasures and it holds an important place at the Conservancy. In 1972, through the advocacy of the Georgia Conservancy and other conservation-focused organizations and citizens, Cumberland was established as a National Seashore, providing for the protection of the island’s upland maritime forests, saltwater marsh and 17 miles of beach.

The preservation of the Cumberland Island National Seashore remains a focus of the Georgia Conservancy in all of our programmatic areas. In addition to our advocacy efforts on the island, every year we take dozens of volunteers to the island to perform service work at Cumberland’s historic structures, remote backcountry trails and deserted beaches.

Groups will assist with National Park priority projects such as trail maintenance, beach clean-up, and the care and maintenance of existing NPS structures. Participants can expect to spend approximately 8 hours performing service work on the island during the weekend.

Our group will camp at NPS campsites near the Sea Camp Campground and will have access to the Sea Camp Comfort Station (showers, sinks, restroom).

This service weekend was the inspiration of our 2015 / 2016 Cumberland Island Trail Restoration Project, an 8-month long trail restoration, GPS mapping and trail signage endeavor led by the Georgia Conservancy's Laura Buckmaster and sponsored by REI's Every Trail Connects campaign. Learn more about the project and purchase your very own Georgia Conservancy Cumberland Island Trail Map!

In-kind donors and local food producers we will be enjoying during our weekend: ASW Distillery (Atlanta), and Cafe Campesino Coffee (Americus).

Join us on a Georgia Conservancy Stewardship Trip to learn more about important location-specific conservation issues, as well as statewide advocacy opportunities. Our goal is simple: Create a connection between some of Georgia’s most precious places and the people needed to protect them.
